Description
Ash wood is an amazingly attractive species of wood. There are many types of ash wood to choose from. For the great look and reliability you are searching for, you will find that our ash wood planks are extraordinary. Installing ash wood flooring is a great way to incorporate a lavish but yet settled look to your home. Ash has good overall strength properties relative to its weight.
Colour Range
The sapwood is light-coloured to nearly white and the heartwood varies from greyish or light brown, to pale yellow streaked with brown. The wood is generally straight-grained with a coarse uniform texture. The degree and availability of light-coloured sapwood, and other properties, will vary according to the growing regions.
Colour Change
Ash ranges from pale to dark brown. White Ash is paler in color than most commercial species, with a natural shine. Easily confused with butternut, ash can be distinguished by its grain, which resembles red oak. Moderate color variation becomes very pronounced on exposure to bright light.
Hardness
Ash is thirty-two percent harder than teak, about two percent harder than red oak, two percent softer than white oak, eight percent softer than hard maple. It has the Janka Hardness rating of 1320.
Stability
Ash is generally straight-grained and shrinks moderately, but it holds its shape well and can be kiln-dried rapidly and satisfactorily. The wood is also heavy (specific gravity 0.55 green), strong, stiff, high in shock resistance, and wears smooth with use.
Installation Recommendations
Suitable for nail or staple down to plywood in residential areas. Care must be taken to properly equalize this specie before installation.
Working Properties
Ash machines well, is good in nailing, screwing and gluing, and can be stained to a very good finish. It dries fairly easily with minimal degrade, and there is little movement in performance. Ash hardwood for flooring has the versatility which makes it among the most easy to work with among hardwood species.
